Title: Remember Charlie
Rating (5 maximum): hh_onhh_onhh_onhh_onhh_on
Supplier/Date Emergency Film Group / Unkown publication date
Scope: A motivating storyteller, Charlie Morecraft captures the audience with a common language and keeps listeners on the edge of their seats as he recreates his near-fatal accident and the incredibly painful aftermath in engaging detail. Audiences from all occupations wake up to the high cost of an accident.
Comments: • The most powerful safety video I have ever seen. When I first saw it presented in a room of 200 people. During the playing of the video you could hear a pin drop in the room.
• Charlie Morecraft's story vividly demonstrates how by using the proper safety procedures and utilizing the appropriate personal protection equipment would have prevented the fire and destruction of an oil refinery and his devastating, life threatening injuries.
• I have presented this video many times. In all cases all who viewed it became much more conscience of the dangers surrounding them in their work place and home. It never was a problem to get them to wear the proper PPE again.

Title: Crane Work Rigging Techniques
Rating: hh_onhh_onhh_onhh_offhh_off
Supplier/Date Vista / Unkown- current
Scope: Chains, Slings, Chokers, Hitches.
Comments: • Seems like a realistic approach
• Contains good information, some that is not obvious
• Encourages inspection with care but without an unrealistic over emphasis
• Shows some defects to look for
• Gives some tips on estimating loads and radius and validates the use of previous experience

Title: Working Around Cranes
Rating: hh_onhh_onhh_onhh_offhh_off
Supplier/Date Coastal / Unkown
Scope: Factors and safety practices surrounding cranes. Major subheadings included weather, power lines, set up, inspection and some work practices.
Comments: • The video is substantially about outdoor mobile cranes. A fair proportion of the time is spent on crane assembly, working around power lines and weather.
• As an aside, some of the scenes were of W. O. Grubb at the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse site.
• The presenter seemed realistic.
• Some of the provisions were difficult to believe. (Cordon off the sweep area, never work under loads)
• The rules were incomplete, as would any video of this length on this topic.
• This might serve as a routine reminder or brief intro. It is not a full training session on what we need to know to work around cranes.

• Covers the basics for moving steel
• Shows good loading techniques

Title: The Casino
Rating: hh_onhh_onhh_offhh_offhh_off
Supplier/Date NEA / 1993
Scope: “The Casino” is a film that shows how workers and employers of the construction industry have taken a stand to reduce workplace accidents and deaths and solve the workers compensation crisis that threatens no only our health system, but our standard of living.
Comments: • Video deals with union erection of structural steel.
• The video consists of representatives of both union and management commenting about their experiences and perspective of workers compensation cost.
• The analogy is that paying money into workers compensation insurance is equivalent to a casino. The only people who benefit from a comp claim are insurance companies, lawyers, and the health system. Workers and employers are the losers.
• Video can be informative to both management and employees but the story becomes old after 10 minutes into the video.

Title: Self-Propelled Elevating Work Platform Safety
Rating: hh_onhh_onhh_onhh_onhh_off
Supplier/Date Grove Manlift/ Unkown
Scope: Reviews all of the safe operating and inspection procedures for scissor man lifts & boom man lifts.
Comments: • Great training video. Great way to train employees to operate these lifts. The video reviews all of the OSHA requirements for training except for the hands on training. I have used this video to train employees as well as train trainers to train employees.
• Video is aimed towards Grove equipment but the principles can be applied to any brand of scissor lift and boom lift.
• Video is split into two parts. Part 1 deals with scissor lifts and is 15 minutes long. Part 2 deals with boom lifts and is 16 minutes long. Each part can be shown separately if you need to train for just one or the other.

Title: Mythbusters: Exploding Lighter
Rating: hh_onhh_onhh_onhh_onhh_on
Supplier/Date Discovery Channel / 2005
Scope: Shows what happens when a butane lighter is exposed to sparks from welding.
Comments:

A very dramatic video showing the dangers posed by welding sparks that are otherwise not possible to be demonstrated. Original video is no longer available, but the segment is part of the new "Mythbusters: Big Blasts Collection" DVD at the following link:

Description: An air powered respirator with built-in welding shield.
Comments:

This is a great respirator if you are trying to protect employees from hexavalent chromium, cadium or other hazardous gases. It does not require fit testing. Filters can be changed to protect against various gases.  It requires a rechargable battery that is included. It can be used in the shop or field. It is heavy and very warm if used in the summer.

Description: Padded Harness
Comments:

This is a great harness and is loved by ironworkers. Comfortable, durable, and easily adjusted to fit. It comes in sizes small, medium, large, and XL. Because ironworkers love them, it is an incentive for them to wear and use fall protection equipment. We offer them as safety incentives.

Description: This is a "kiosk" style online safety eyewear supplier. For those who are looking for a quick and convenient way to assist team members in getting the proper prescription safety eyewear, this company offers a wonderful option, especially if you are currently doing any administration around safety eyewear and/or are offering a company subsidy or reimbursement program.
Comments:

Here is another example of how technology can make our lives simpler. This program/service may not work for very small or mobile work sites. However, for larger and fixed base operations, it's something to consider.

Description: Self retracting lifelines with dual tie-back lanyards
Comments:

We have recently started converting all of our welders and connectors working in the air to this system. We haven't heard any complaints about the weight of the unit (under 3 lbs.), or that it restricts movement. The unit comes with a back pad that can be fitted to most harnesses to increase comfort. Also, the tie-back lanyards come in handy in many situations where anchor points are few and far between. These units are great for working in the air since they restrict most free falls to 2'-0" or less, which greatly reduces the impact forces on the body.

Description: Full body harness with upper webbing made of fire resistant Nomex / Kevlar material
Comments:

We have started going to this harness for all welders. The Nomex Kevlar webbing holds up great against welding splatter and cutting/grinding sparks. The cost is slightly higher than a normal nylon webbing harness, but we have found it has 3 to 4 times its usable lifespan.

Description: Retrieves a worker who has fallen into a harness.
Comments:

Fall rescue planning is now a mandatory item for all erectors. This is a retrieval system for employees who fall into their harness. It is critical that the worker does not stay suspended above the floor for so long that it inhibits blood circulation. With the innovation of the Gotcha Retrieval System, the worker can be retrieved with ease and speed. It comes complete in one bag so that it can continue up the building with the raising gang. It is small enough to fit into a normal size gang box. Each system contains a 14 ft extendable pole, a block and tackle, rigging strap, and a handbrake. The system can be prepared and ready to use in less than 3 minutes. Once you set an anchorage point, it is ready. With this system, you can lower the employee down or lift him up to safety. I have used the system over years and trained many local firefighters on its use and versatility. We do not build any high rise without our Gotcha System on hand. I highly recommend this product.

Description: New mini lite dual retractable is another innovative product that meets the new DIN en 360 standard.
Comments:

We have used Ultra-Safe fall protection for more than 15 years. The new mini lite dual retractable is another innovative product that not only keeps our workers safe, but also meets the new DIN en 360 standard (approved for foot level anchorage). This retractable is being used by both connectors and bolt-up hands. It ensures 100% tie off and the ease of use of this equipment has made the transition very smooth.

In addition, the savings on using this system over replacing dual lanyards is truly a great cost effective measure. Repairs on all Ultra-Safe retractables can be done at most of your local distributors, which eliminates down time and the need to carry excess stock. I highly recommend this retractable to all erectors.

Safety Publication Reviews

Title: Safe By Accident
Rating: hh_onhh_onhh_onhh_offhh_off
Authors: Judy Agnew and Aubrey Daniels
Scope: Explains behavior based on safety.
Comments:

This book is written for the leadership of companies who are interested in taking their organizations to the next level in safety. It is very informative on the science behind behavioral based safety programs. Managers/Leaders of organizations who currently do not have or are just starting to look at a behavioral based safety process would find this book very helpful. Although, it calls into question the effectivness of many "time honored" safety programs, calling them a waste of time, money and potentially creating a less safety work environment. It does offer suggestions on what to do instead. It is likely that most who read this book will find it hard to reject all the items that the authors feel are ineffective. With that being said it does leave the reader with a more indepth thought process around the "why" employee's work at-risk and what a proactive organization can do to change that culture. At the very least, readers of this publication will come away with two or three new ideas or thought processes that will help them to achieve a culture of safety.
