Nancy Gavlin Named AISC’s Director of Education

The American Institute of Steel Construction is proud to welcome Nancy L. Gavlin, S.E., P.E., as its new Director of Education. She will be responsible for AISC’s university relations and continuing education activities. AISC and its members traditionally partner with colleges and universities to enhance the educational offerings for future structural engineers, architects, and construction managers. In addition, AISC has a long-running education program for professional engineers that offers practical seminars in more than 70 cities annually.
Gavlin was most recently a visiting lecturer at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign and a Structural Engineer at Skidmore Owings & Merrill in Chicago. Prior to that, she was Co-Founder and Partner at Gavlin & Reckers Structural Engineers and a Structural Engineer at Skilling Helle Christian Robertson, Inc. in Seattle. Her structural engineering experience includes projects such as the St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, MT, and abroad at the Naples Consulate Office Building in Naples, Italy and the Guatemala Embassy in Guatemala City, Guatemala.
"We’re very fortunate that Nancy had just finished a three-year appointment as a visiting lecturer at the University of Illinois," said Charles J. Carter, S.E., P.E., AISC vice president and chief structural engineer. "With that experience, and her 30 years as a practicing structural engineer, Nancy is well positioned to bring significant benefit to practicing engineers, students and professors alike throughout AISC educational programs."
In addition to her work experience, Gavlin is a Board Member for the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation Structural Engineer Licensing and an active member of various professional organizations such as the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying and the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois. She has written six publications and received several distinguished service and publication awards from NCEES, SEAOI and the University of Illinois Civil Engineering Alumni Association.
Gavlin received her bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her master’s degree in Structural Engineering at the University of California at Berkeley.
