11 Projects Win EAE Awards

AISC will present Engineering Awards of Excellence to a 11 projects at the upcoming 2005 North American Steel Construction Conference (April 6-9, 2005 in Montreal, Canada). These prestigious awards give national recognition to structural engineering firms for innovation in steel-framed building projects.

Judges considered the total structural design with an emphasis on:

    • A creative solution to the project’s program requirements;
    • Application of innovative design approaches in areas such as connections, gravity systems, lateral load resisting systems, fire protection, and blast;
    • Use of innovative construction methods such as EDI, design-build, or advanced computer modeling; and
    • Significance of engineering achievement and elegance of design.


Project entries were judged in four size categories—less than $10 million, $10 million to less than $25 million, $25 million to less than $100 million, and more than $100 million.

The 2005 winners were:

$100 million and greater

    • National Winner: Seattle Central Library – Seattle, WA
      Magnusson Klemencic Associates - Seattle, WA
    • Merit Award: The Adaptive Reuse of Soldier Field – Chicago, IL
      Thornton-Tomasetti Group – Chicago, IL
    • Merit Award: St. Luke's Hospital Cardiac Center and Patient Tower – Milwaukee, WI
      Graef, Anhalt, Schloemer & Associates, Inc. - Milwaukee, WI

$25 million or greater, but less than $100 million

    • National Winner: William J. Clinton Presidential Center Museum Building – Little Rock, AR
      Leslie E. Robertson Associates, R.L.L.P. – New York, NY
    • Merit Award: Jay Pritzker Pavilion – Chicago, IL
      Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP – Chicago, IL
    • Merit Award: University of Chicago Graduate School of Business – Chicago, IL
      Thornton-Tomasetti Group – Chicago, IL

$10 million or greater, but less than $25 million

    • National Winner: The University of Arizona Large Binocular Telescope Enclosure – Mount Graham, AZ
      M3 Engineering & Technology Corporation – Tucson, AZ
    • Merit Award: St. Martin's Episcopal Church – Houston, TX
      Matrix Structural Engineers – Houston, TX
    • Merit Award: Robert Hoag Rawlings Public Library – Pueblo, CO
      KL&A, Inc. – Golden, CO

Less than $10 million

    • National Winner: Desert Bloom Porte Cochere – Cabazon, CA
      ASI Advanced Structures Inc. – Marina del Ray, CA
    • Merit Award: Davis Conference Center– Layton, UT
      ARW Engineers– Ogden, UT

 

This year's jury included:

    • Larry E. Whaley, P.E., President, Haynes Whaley Associates, Houston;
    • Ronald F. Middlebrook, S.E., Principal, Middlebrook + Louie Structural Engineers, San Francisco; and
    • Benjamin Baer, P.E., S.E., Vice President, Ruben J. Baer & Associates Ltd., Skokie, IL
